The lone platinum bullion coin from the United States Mint is part of the American Eagle Series. The American Eagle Platinum Coin program debuted in 1997 and, despite shrinking in diversity in 2008, the program remains an annual offering from the United States Mint. Explore the details of the American Eagle Platinum Series.
When the series debuted in 1997, the US Mint offered both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions of the coin. All coins in the series have .9995 pure platinum content and face values in US Dollars (USD). The available weights and face values include:
From 1997 to 2008, the US Mint offered the American Eagle Platinum Coins in these four weights in both BU and Proof versions. In 2009, the Proof Series was cut back to just the 1 oz platinum coin, while the BU Series was suspended throughout the Great Recession. In 2014, a 1 oz BU coin was issued, but halted again in 2015. As of 2016, the BU Series is back in annual production with only a 1 oz platinum coin available.
Since 1997, the BU American Eagle Platinum Coin has maintained the same obverse and reverse design elements. The American Eagle Platinum Coin is the lone exception in the American Eagle bullion series when it comes to the use of historical images of Liberty. The BU American Eagle Platinum Coin has only ever featured a 1997 design from John Mercanti depicting the face of Liberty from the Statue of Liberty. The design details for the BU coins are as follows:
The Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins have followed a much different design path. The US Mint has used the aforementioned designs for the BU coin only twice. The first time came in the debut release in 1997 and the second occurrence came in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of the series. Since then, the US Mint has taken the approach of offering various mini-series of designs for the Proof American Eagle Platinum Series. These include:
For the above collections, the US Mint maintained the use of Mercanti’s obverse depiction of Liberty through the 2017 release. Each issue featured a new reverse design. Starting in 2018, the mint has offered new obverse images of Liberty each year with a static image of the American bald eagle on the reverse.
