Peace Dollar Silver Coins at Provident Metals

Despite their relatively short tenure, Peace Dollar Silver Coins have proved to be immensely popular over the years. In 1918, the United States melted down nearly 300-million-dollar silver coins and sold them as bars to the British to help their war-funding against Germany. Thus, the U.S. Treasury created new coins to replace them. These coins became the Peace Dollar Silver Coins. Learn more about these iconic coins, right here at Provident Metals.

History of the Peace Dollar Silver Coin

The Pittman Act of 1918 required the United States Mint to strike millions of dollar silver coins and to begin so in 1921. Numismatists wanted the US Mint to create a coin that memorialized peace, following World War I.

The US Mint created a contest where invited sculptors would send in designs. The winner would receive $1,500 for their work. The rules of the contest stated that the obverse should depict a portrait of Lady Liberty while the reverse needed to showcase an eagle.

    Design

A 34-year-old Anthony de Francisci won a contest to create the design for the new Dollar Silver Coin. Francisci was the least experienced in the contest and had only worked with the US Mint once prior.

    • Obverse: A modern depiction of Lady Liberty is seen in left-profile relief on the obverse side of these coins. Liberty is based on his wife, Teresa, and is seen with a radiate crown and flowing hair. The issue date on the bottom while inscriptions read “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.”
    • Reverse: A bald eagle design is seen on the reverse field. The eagle is seen perched on a rock in right-profile relief. The sun can be seen rising from the bottom of the coin. Inscriptions read “Peace,” “One Dollar,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “United States of America.”

    Mintage Numbers

In total, three branches of the US Mint (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) have produced coins in this series. Peace Dollar Silver Coins debuted in 1921 and were released annually until 1928. The coin program made a two-year return from 1934 to 1935 and has been halted ever since.

    • Philadelphia Mint: 1921-1935 – 111,230,179
    • San Francisco Mint: 1922-1935 – 52,286,000
    • Denver Mint: 1922-1923, 1926-1927, 1934 – 27,061,100

    Certified Peace Dollar Silver Coins

Certified Dollar Silver Coins are an immensely popular option for investors and collectors. One of the more popular options for investors and collectors, due to their rarity and uniqueness, is Certified Peace Dollar Silver Coins.  Certified coins on Provident Metals are coins that are professionally graded by either the Professional  Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). These coins are graded on a 1-70 scale, known as the Sheldon Scale.
