Morgan Dollar Silver Coins debuted in 1878 after production of Dollar Silver Coins was halted for 5 years. The director of the US Mint, Henry Richard Linderman went to the Royal Mint to recruit George T. Morgan to be the assistant engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. Morgan would go on to create the design for this iconic coin as well.
Linderman instructed Morgan and Chief Engraver, William Barber, to design a coin with an eagle with outstretched wings on the reverse and Lady Liberty on the obverse. Morgan decided to use the likeness of Anna Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia, to create his Liberty design. Linderman chose this design over Barber’s, thus creating the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin.
Both the obverse and reverse field were designed by George T. Morgan. This coin is widely regarded as one of the most stunning coins ever produced by the US Mint.
Morgan Dollar Silver Coins debuted in 1878 and were released annually until 1904. They made a one-year return in 1921 before stopping for good again. In total, five unique branches of the US Mint produced these iconic coins.
